Watrous’s history

Watrous is a town about 106 kilometres east of Saskatoon. It was named after Frank Watrous Morse. Over the years it has built an economy on agriculture and on tourism, helped by its closeness to Manitou Beach, home of the Mineral Spa and Danceland, the dance hall known as the "Home of the World Famous Dance Floor Built on Horsehair."

In 1939 the transmitter for CBK, CBC Radio One's main station in Saskatchewan, was placed at Watrous. The location was chosen so that a strong nighttime signal from the 50,000-watt clear-channel station would reach most of the Prairie Provinces, and so that one transmitter could serve most of the province's populated areas, including Regina and Saskatoon. Watrous is still the station's city of licence and its transmitter is still considered the primary signal, although the studios are in Regina.

The town's All Saints Anglican church on Main Street has a stained glass window that could be more than 500 years old. It may have come from St John the Baptist Anglican Church in Latton, Wiltshire, England.
